Glue recommendations

We tested 7 glue products  to see which ones would give us the best results.  All 7 of them were bought locally at Michaels Craft Store.  I think you can find these at any home improvement store as well.

Of the seven  we liked 4 and 3 we did not.  If I had to pick a favorite it would be Amazing Goop.

Generally the glue needs to be very thick, it cannot be runny as generally there will be a gap of apx 1/32 to 1/16 of an inch between the bottom of the button and the item you are gluing it to.

Super glue quick set epoxy

Yes

Set up very quickly (about 5 min)

Basically a thick glue, but just a bit on the runny side.  Had to mix it to activate the glue.

This one has the strongest smell of all the glues I tested.

Amazing Goop

Yes

Nice and thick - held very well - apx 24 hrs needed for drying time

E6000

Yes

Nice and thick - held very well - apx 48 hrs needed for drying time

Devcon

Yes

Nice and thick - held very well - apx 48 hrs needed for drying time

Elmer’s Ultimate Glue

No

This glue dried brown, it also bubbled up as it dried.  It foamed up and out of the button bottom and was messy.

Gorilla Glue

No

This glue dried brown, it also bubbled up as it dried.  It foamed up and out of the button bottom and was messy.

Liquid Fusion

No

I had high hopes for this one as I really liked to way the glue dispensed.  The tip gives you a nice flow and no “string” or mess when you stop dispensing.  This glue set up VERY soft.  It did not have enough holding power for doing cover button projects

Gluing a button to a shiny metal surface
When gluing a fabric covered button to a shiny metal surface you must 1st rough it up.

I use a nail file, and then clean the surface with rubbing alcohol from the drug store.

When sanding your item take care to ensure that the sanded area does not exceed the dimension of the button.

We recomend that you sand the purse hook, pill box and compact mirror as these items have very shiny sufaces
